Newtonmore v Kyles Athletic - Macaulay Cup Final

A trip to our " bogey ground" Mossfield to take on Kyles. It all started well enough, taking the game to Kyles and putting their defence under pressure and in the 8th minute great work from Paul and a fine pass to Danny saw our striker smash home the opening goal, 'More were looking strong at this point. Then a long hopeful ball out of nowhere found our defenders out of position, Mike failed to clear and it was 1 all. This gave Kyles the incentive and they began to dominate, a couple of very good saves from Mike kept us in it. In the 22nd min a move down the left a ball across goal and a superb strike from John should have put us 2  1 ahead but the goal judge inexplicably flagged for a foul by Glen and the goal was disallowed. The game seemed to flat for a while until late in the half when a well worked free hit saw Kyles take the lead. Half time Kyles 2 ' More 1

Early in the 2nd half a great shot from John was well saved Kenny in the Kyles goal, just a short time later and the equaliser came, again Danny finding space to drill the ball low into the corner. At this point the game was wide open and chances came and went for both sides making it a good game to watch. Kyles took the lead once more when they latched on to a loose ball and beat Mike from close range. Then came the moment that changed the game from the restarting throw up Jamie took a swing at the ball and was red carded by the referee, a decision that baffled everyone at Mossfield, there was certainly no malice in Jamie's swing and no contact with any opponnent, so no foul was committed yet a red card was produced, only the refferee knows why.

Kyles took control of the game as 'More tried to regroup, indeed the next goal was the equaliser, a superb strike from Glen into the roof of the net from 25 yards out, 3  3 and anybody's game. Again Glen tested the Kyles keeper but this time he saved well. The extra was beginning to tell and Kyles took advantage making the score 4  3 in their favour.

Then came another controversial decision Danny scoring from close in and the goal judge once again flagging for a foul.

Chris was taken out of the game by a bad foul from a Kyles defender who was yellow carded making his red card earlier seem even more strange. In injury time Steven floated a long ball towards goal and with the keeper beaten the ball came off the crossbar. Final score Kyles 4  Newtonmore 3

Congratulations to Kyles who played well on the day, we now look forward to meeting them once again in a few weeks in the Camanachd Cup Final
