Newtonmore 2nds vs Lochside Rovers
Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup Final

Report by The Strathy

Newtonmore ended a 12 year wait for the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup when they triumphed 5-0 with all the goals coming from birthday boy Calum Stewart.  Stewart celebrated his 21st birthday in style with his strikes coming in the 3rd, 61st, 67th, 71st and 78th minute against Lochside Rovers at Jubilee Park in Ballachulish.

For Calum it was more than a dream come true to finally lift the Sutherland Cup with Newtonmore seconds.  He said "To score one or two goals in the final would have been great, but to get all five was a bit surreal.  But the main thing it was about the team and getting the win as it means a lot to the rest of the team and the village".  The man of the match said the game was not comfortable as the final score suggested and had praise for keeper Owen Fraser.  "It was only 1-0 at the interval and if it was not for Owen then it could have been three or four goals to one to Lochside before we made it 2-0. Owen made some great saves and in the second half our superior fitness told and we were a lot more dominant, but it was closer for most of the game than the scoreline indicated".  As a result he said his favourite goal was the second which helped to give his team a cushion.

Calum's first strike came early in the first half but Lochside rallied and might have gone ahead if it had not been for Fraser who made a series of vital stops.  In the second half Newtonmore's midfield experience began to tell allowing Stewart to score his second.  The Lochside team began to wilt and Stewart went on to score a further three times before the final whistle as he celebrated his 21st birthday in style.
