Newtonmore went into the match with the Camanachd Cup holders, knowing that a draw would be enough to cross the finish line. The club's six-title streak signals a remarkable turnaround in their league fortunes after living in the shadows of close rivals Kingussie for the 1990s and the Noughties. Even before the advent of the Premiership in 1996, More's best run was their 1975-79 string of five successes in teh old North Division One.
Newtonmore made certain of their Premier League title with a 3-2 win at the Eilan, but were made to wait for teh breakthrough after a goal-less opening half.
Despite efforts to dispose of the visitors as quickly as possible, the game was in its 58th minute before Fraser MacKintosh nailed the opening goal for Newtonmore. Norman Campbell added a second soon afterwards in the 63rd minute to help the local support breathe easier. But Lovat battled on, and Kevin Bartlett grabbed one back in 72 minutes to ensure that it was not all plain sailing. Norman Campbell was on band in the 80th minute, however, to score his second and restore the two-goal advantage.
There was a swift response from Lorne MacKay just two minutes later, but there were no further scares for the Eilan side, who had the comfort of a two-goal margin to claim their title.
