Newtomore Won 2-1
Lochaber had started well and had
the best of the game for the first 20 minutes. Mike
Russell found his way into the referee's book for a foul on
Delaney when the latter was in a threatening position.
Stuart Collision's resulting free hit flew just over the bar
in what turned out to be Lochaber's best effort of the half.
As the game wore on, Newtonmore came more into things and both glen Mackintosh and Iain Robinson went close. Newtonmore took the lead in the 26th minute through Norman Campbell, who up to that point had been kept fairly quiet by his namesake, Lochaber full-back Lochlan Campbell. But this time Campbell was able to break the shackles and powered through the defence to knock a low shot past keeper MacDonald.
The lead lasted for just five minutes, however, as Lochaber responded with a superb goal from Zander Ferguson. He came in from deep to receive a neat pass from Shaun Nicholson and turned to fire home from 20 yards.
Newtonmore quickly recovered and piled on the pressure. Mackintosh had an effort saved by MacDonald, who a short time later pulled off a hand save to keep out Menzies.
Blue and whites manager PJ Mackintosh tweaked the forward line at half-time. With the centreline now firing onall cylinders, Lochaber found themselves severely tested for much of the second period as the Badenoch side gained dominance. but Lochaber hung on, with determined defence and that superb performance from keeper MacDonald.
In a rare attack just into injury time, Lochaber found a way to break out of More's vice-like grip, but the final shot from Delaney was just too high.
Immediately, the ball came back to the Lochaber end and Campbell slipped it inside to Mackintosh who turned twice to make space for the shot and fire it past MacDonald. The looks on the Lochaber players faces said it all as they knew the game was close to the final whistle. But even then they had not realised just how close runners-up medals were until the referee restarted the game in the centre and immediately blew for time.
Scorers for Newtonmore
