launched their Mactavish Cup campaign in style. In their
first round tie against Lovat they dominated right from the
start and it was not surprise when Fraser Mackintosh fired
home a ground-skimming shot from 20 yards to beat Lovat
keeper Stuart MacDonald. Five minutes later More went
further ahead through a fierce drive from Evan Menzies 15
Lovat fought hard to try to get back into the match, but returning blue and white keeper Mike Ritchie was up to the task as both Greg Matheson and Kevin Bartlett got rare shots away on target at the other end. Just before half time, following a string of opportunities and some good saves from Macdonald, Glen Mackintosh got on the scoresheet with Newtonmore's third, another sharp ground shot from 15 yards out for the home side to enjoy a comfortable lead at the break.
The second period was much more even, but there were few chances either way and the halftime lead proved more than enough to see Newtonmore through to a scond round tie against Skye or Kilmallie, whose tie was postponed due to an unplayable pitch in Portree.
Manager PJ Mackintosh was happy with an unexpectedly comfortable passage. He said "It was a very good win considering we lost Michael Russell, Chris Sellar and Ian Richardson the day before the game and were already missing Jamie Robinson and Conor Jones. We called up Darrin Fowler for his first team debut along with Drew Macdonald, David Fraser and Neil Stewart from the second team. That's a tribute to our squad strength. I was particularly pleased with teenager Craig Ritchie's excellent display at wing back. His father Michael, coming out of retirement for the suspended Owen Fraser, made a couple of good saves in the first half while Lovat goalkeeper Stuart Macdonald pulled off three or four saves in the same period".
