Newtomore Won 4-2
Newtonmore started strongly and quickly established midfield domination with a good supply of ball to the forward line with Menzies on the left, Campbell on the right, Neil Stewart at half forward and Glen Mackintosh leading the charge. The Skye goal was under pressure from the outset but Gannon was not really tested until the 17th minute when he kept out a fierce Glen Mackintosh effort. Newtonmore from then on laid siege with a string of saves from Gannon keeping the scorecard blank.
James Pringle had Skye's first sight of goal when he fired a shot wide on 22 mintues, but soon afterwards the home side made the breakthrough their early play had threatened. In the 25th minute a great strike from Stewart had been well saved by Gannon but the ball dropped close by Menzies feet from the rebound. He was the first to react to force it over the line. More top goalkeeping from Gannon denied Glen Mackintosh as Newtonmore turned the screw.
In an effort to stem the tide Skye shuffled their pack and pushed Iain Murray into attack, with Will Cowie moving to wing centre. But it was to no avail as Newtonmore extended their lead int he 41st minute when Menzies struck from in front of goal, 20 yards out with a rising rocket that hit the roof of the net.
After the restart Skye showed briefly, but the Blue and Whites defence coped easily and 10 minute into the half it was Campbell's turn to fire in a exocet from 25 yards out into the roof of the net to make it 3-0. Attacks from the home side subsided although there was little action at the other end. Newtonmore had taken the foot off the pedal a little and Skye, to their credit, battled on bravely but did not create any clear-cut openings. Iain Robinson rattled home the Blue and Whites fourth goald int eh 70th minute. Skye stuck to their task and substitutes Ally MacLeod and Neil John Campbell did well as the visitors finished with a flourish. On 84 minutes a swweetly-struck Jordan Murchison effort flew past Newonmore keeper Owen Fraser to make it 4-1. Four mintues later Fraser was penalised for playing the ball while he lay on the ground and Murchison duly despatched the resulting spot hit for 4-2.
Eilan boss PJ Mackintosh said
after the Skye victory "it was a pretty comfortable game. We
were 4-0 up and coasting and the late goals meant the
scoreline did not really reflect the game. The result
was never in any doubt".
