June / July 2017 Newsletter

On The Field
After a difficult start to the season the 1sts have only lost one game in June/July away to Lovat. They have won the Mactavish Cup, reached the final of the Macaulay Cup and the semi final of the Camanachd Cup. All this despite having very bad luck with a succession of injuries which has tested the depth of the squad. The outstanding performance was our 4 - 1 win over Kyles in the Camanachd.

The 2nds are sitting top of the league and are in the final of the Strathdearn Cup. The 6 - 4 loss to a good young Kingussie side in the Sutherland Cup was no disgrace, but highlighted a lack of fitness of some of the players. Some of them have the ability to challenge for a 1st team place, but will not be considered for selection unless they are regular attendees at training.

Highland Games
Rory Kennedy and Ian Richardson have agreed to run in the hill race and we are having a sweep to guess their combined times. The prize for the nearest guess is £150 with a consolation of £50 with entries £1 a guess.

Look out for entry forms at the clubhouse, in the post office and from players. We will also be running a 50/50 raffle on games day as well as selling merchandise at our stall, courtesy of the Dower House, as usual.

Jock Paul Mackintosh Veterans 6s
Sunday 13th August Paul has refreshed the event this year and we already have 10 teams. Each team must have an over 40, an over 30, a lady and a youth player 3 of which will be on the field at all times. Further offers of help for putting the tent up, behind the bar, with the BBQ, teas, with the 50/50 raffle would be much appreciated. The start time is still to be confirmed but will be either 11am or noon. I hope we get a great turnout for what should be a really competitive, but fun day.

12 Days of Xmas Raffle
Surely not Xmas already I hear you exclaim! The hamper raffle has been very popular the last couple of years so we are enhancing it to have a bumper 12 prizes donated by supporters and local businesses. Tickets will go on sale in early October and the prizes will be drawn at the Xmas sale on Saturday 2nd December.

Dr Johnny Cattanach Jars
5 jars have been returned already with £150.48 the running total. There are still another 30+ jars out there so we should reach our ambitious target of £1000 towards the creation of the new field. Work on this will start in late November.

Thanks to Creag Meagaidh
Mainly French volunteers, courtesy of SNH and Rory Richardson, have helped paint some of the concrete posts round the pitch as well as the changing rooms. We are expecting them back to chip the vast quantity of wood which last year's volunteers cut down. Thanks also to Russwood for the loan of the chipper.

Sanding and Spiking
We were unable to get this arranged in May so it will now be left to the back end of the year with about 100 tons of sand and a winter fertiliser. 9] Antlers cafe ad board Many thanks to Jennifer to be the latest business to take an ad board at the Eilan.

Ad Board Repairs
Many thanks to John Begg and to Iain Brodie for the repairs to the ad boards including ensuring protective plastic strips along the top of them. 11] Concrete post preparation About 90 of the concrete posts need scraped with wire brushes before we can get them painted. As my wrists are not up to this is there someone out there who is prepared to help?!

Artist in Residence
Deirdre Nelson has been appointed to the Newtonmore position. Her brief is to produce a number of art works representative of the life of the club by next summer. The works from all 4 artists involved will be on display at the 2018 Camanachd Cup Final and will then go on tour. Deirdre will be paying her first visit to us on Sunday 13th August for the Veterans 6s.

Road Safety
The Council have proposed a crossing point with warning signs near the gate. However the committee's view is that the crossing point is in the wrong place so a site meeting is being arranged to discuss it.

Dinner Dance
The date has been changed from November 11th to November 25th
