June 2018 Newsletter

On the field

On the field June was the best month of the year so far with both teams undefeated. The highlight was of course our 42nd Mactavish Cup win, making it three in a row, this time against Kinlochshiel. They have been the form team for the last eighteen months, but hadn't been to the final before. Although not a classic because of the weather I don't think anyone felt that we deserved to lose the match. Deirdre Nelson our Artist in Residence accompanied the team throughout the day and got some great ideas for her project!

The 1sts then had, perhaps their best performance of the seson, in the 8-1 demolition of Lochaber last week and the 2nds scored 17 goals without conceding in their three matches during June. Four fourteen year olds have taken to the field for the 2nds this year which is also great for the future.

Younger Teams
The under 14s and under 17s have competed well and the latter had a very good 6-0 win against Kilmallie during the week. Perhaps some of our best performances have come at Primary School level at a number of tournaments. The highlight has probably been the P4/5 success at the Shinty World Cup last week in Inverness.

All youth shinty training is now on a break until mid August. Many thanks to all the coaches who give up so much of their time to coach the youngsters and take them to tournaments.

Which game to watch this Saturday is a dilemma: the 1sts have a rearranged league game against Lochaber at the Eilan whilst the 2nds have a Sutherland cup semi final against Fort William. I commented before the last Fort William game in May that we often struggled against them and this proved true as we were well beaten 3-0, our only defeat of the season so far. [Rumour has it that Lochaber are trying to get the 1sts match postponed on Saturday so keep an eye on the website].

Vetreran 6s Sunday 12th August....volunteer needed
Paul is unable to organise the event this year and we urgently need a volunteer to take this on. Please contact me asap if you are able to help as otherwise we will need to cancel the event this year.

Williamson 6s
Another great evening with many thanks to all who helped with refereeing, the BBQ, home baking etc and especially to Colin Stewart for again organising it. Both the club and the PTA raised funds from it, but of greatest importance was that well over 100 children enjoyed participating in it.

Many thanks to Rob Ritchie for supplying the medals and the silver mounted caman wih this year which
was presented to Kyle Clark of Alvie by last years winner Hope Borthwick.
Newtonmore got to all three finals but honours were spread around with Kingussie winning the Balavil Cup for the youngest players, Newtonmore the Gergask Shield for the P4/5 and Alvie winning the Williamson trophy.

Texas Scramble
Twenty two teams turned out on a glorious day last Sunday. Many thanks to everyone who provided sponsorship, prizes or took part and/or bought raffle tickets. Special thanks to Jazza and Eddy for all the organisation which was very worthwhile as we raised £1400 for the club and the golf club did well too.

Road Safety Measures
The position remains unchanged. The Council have raised a requisition for the road marking to be undertaken so we are waiting with bated breath. After that is done the club will probably need to create a short path along the verge on the Eilan side as the crossing point is supposed to be 10 yards towards the village.

Dr Johnny Cattanach Field
The lack of progress the last two months has been very frustrating, but the contractor had other commitments. The good news is that the spraying of the weeds took place a few days ago and the final work is scheduled to start on 23rd July.

Pitmain estate
Many thanks to them for supporting the club with a donation of £1000 which is being used to help support kids shinty alongside the support from Alvie House.

Player off work injury payments
The Committee has decided that the rate through the insurance policy has not kept place with inflation.
Accordingly players will be now eligible for a sum of £150/week.

Water leak
Many thanks to Alan Orr for the extensive work he did with Rob Ritchie's help in sorting the leak and putting in new pipework at the Smithy goal end.

More volunteers wanted!
Flyers were handed out at the last home game asking for additional volunters for match days as well as during the week. There are lots of things help is needed with. Volunteering can be regular as well as occasional, during the day or in the evening. Please contact me to discuss, without obligation!

New sign
This will be going up soon once the correct brackets have been delivered.

New flag
Many thanks to Tom Robertson of the Highland Games for helping source this. It should be flying again this month.
