The Boys of the Eilan Shinty in Newtonmore 1820 - 1945
Rosemary M Gibson

with Rob Ritchie

Rosemary Gibson's book The Boys of the Eilan marks the 125th anniversary of Newtonmore Camanachd Club. The author weaves together press reports, club records, personal reminisences and local shinty literature to illustrate the growth of Newtonmore Camanachd Club from its early struggles to national champions. The Club's history is set within the wider context of the development of camanachd from a folk pastime into an organised sport. The author presents the evolution of the shinty club within the social context of the transformation of Newtonmore from an obscure village into one of the most popular holiday resorts in the Highlands.

"With its excemplary diversity of sources and its acommpanying CD takes local and regional historiography in the Highlands into the 21st century and sets a stardard ... "  George Dixon

This engaging study ... a joy of this study is the way that the text is so well illustrated with photographs of teams, stanzas of poetry and of prose and an analysis of the Gaelic language and shinty.  To round things off there is a CD, with a mix of traditional and modern poetry and music; much more decorous than the equivalent for rugby or football would offer"

"The author very succesffully charts the evolution of shinty in its social, economic and cultural context.  Each of the topics has been thoroughly researched and reflecting this, the text is fully referenced and contains a comprehensive bibliography, both of which are exemplary.  The quality of printing, editing and layout of information in the book are equally impressive".  Scottish Local History
